Clinical staty of Cesarean Sections

Abstract
There have been considerable changes in obstetric practice in recent years, with the trend of increasing applicability of cesarean section, which is caused by performance of cesarean section without any significant operative complications.
This study was based on retrospective investigation of the 321 cesarean section cases among 2,895 deliveries from Jan. 1, 1976 to Dec. 31, 1979 at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chun Nam University Hospital.
The results were as follows:
1) Overall incidence of cesarean section was 11.1% of the total deliveries, while primary section was 9.3% and repeated section was 1.8%.
The annual cesarean section rate showed increasing tendency gradually.
2) In the distribution of age, the 26~30 aged group was the most common (51.7%).
3) Large proportion of cesarean sections (25.5%) were done at 41Th. week of gestation.
4) In the body weight distribution of infants, the group of 3,001~3,500gm p was the most common (31.1%).
5) Among the indications for primary cesarean section, C.P.D. was the most common (20.2%). In the primigravida, the rate of C.P.D. was 36.6%, breech 11.4% and placenta previa 9.8%, while in the multigravida, the rate of placenta previa was 19.7%, C.P.D 10.1% and breech 9.1% in order.
6) In the majority(97.2%) general anesthesia was given, but only in the minority 2.8% spinal anesthesia. 7) Lower cervical transverse was the most common(61.4%) and the other a¢¥ was vertical(29.3%).
8) In the combined surgery, tubal legation was the most common(60.6%), and the others were cesarean hysterectomy(22.0%), and tubal legation with appendectomy (4. 5 % ) etc.
9) About 43% of patients(138 cases) received transfusion during operation or postpartum period. Less than 2 pints of blood were given to the majority(51.4%) of the transfused patients.
10) Prenatal mortality was 14.7%. Its most frequent maternal cause was abruptio placenta and most frequent fetal cause were prematurity and F.D.I.U. (unknown).
11) There was only one maternal death in the 321 cesarean sections.
